BEHIND THE WORLD

Behind every LUCKYNELLY piece is a process of sketches, materials, fittings and quiet details. Each handbag is shaped in Berlin as a small-edition object — from first idea to final editorial image.

The Story Behind LUCKYNELLY

A journey from early sustainable design experiments to a Berlin-based vegan luxury atelier.

it all started with love

Sandy, our family dog, taught me that animals are never “just animals.” She brought our family closer together and changed the way I saw the world. Looking back, this was the very beginning of everything that would later become LUCKYNELLY.

The Beginning

Before LUCKYNELLY

Long before LUCKYNELLY existed, sustainability had already become part of Christine Rochlitz's design philosophy. While studying fashion design in Berlin, she began exploring environmentally conscious materials, craftsmanship and long-lasting product design.

design with purpose

During my Fashion Design diploma, I explored silhouettes, materials, textile techniques and storytelling. Every collection began with mood boards, sketches and countless experiments before becoming a finished design.

Sustainability became part of my design philosophy during my Fashion Design diploma in 2004. I created hand screen-printed textiles with my own patterns and developed my first handbags—driven by the belief that design should slow people down instead of encouraging endless consumption.

designing for global brands

Before founding LUCKYNELLY, I spent several years designing collections, prints and product concepts for established fashion and lifestyle brands. It taught me the craftsmanship behind commercial design. But something was missing — the freedom to create a brand built on my own values.

After years of designing for others, I finally wanted to create something that truly reflected my own values. LUCKYNELLY was born in 2012, inspired by Lucky and Nelly—two companions who changed my life and became the heart of everything I create.

from paper patterns to prototypes

Every LUCKYNELLY bag started with sketches, paper patterns and countless hours of craftsmanship. From the very beginning, the goal was to create sculptural handbags without animal leather — combining precision, innovation and a different vision of luxury.

When I founded LUCKYNELLY in 2012, truly luxurious vegan handbags were still almost impossible to find.

I wanted to change that.

From the beginning, every material was carefully researched, tested and selected with one goal: to create handbags that are ethical, exceptional and built to last.

It was never just about finding alternatives — it was about raising the standard.

every bag begins by hand

Every LUCKYNELLY bag begins with an idea — followed by sketches, paper patterns, material selection and handcrafted prototypes.

Every detail, from the hardware to the final stitch, is tested, refined and reworked until proportion, function and craftsmanship come together.

Long before production begins, each design is brought to life by hand in the Berlin atelier.

AN EARLY MILESTONE

AN EARLY MILESTONE

In 2014, LUCKYNELLY received the PETA Germany Vegan Fashion Award for the Best Women’s Accessory.

The winning design was a handcrafted belt made from real zebrawood combined with vegan materials—proving that innovative, animal-free design could be both luxurious and award-winning.

It was one of the first recognitions that reinforced the vision behind LUCKYNELLY: creating exceptional fashion without animal leather.

FIRST FEATURE IN VOGUE

In 2015, LUCKYNELLY was contacted by British Vogue and featured for the first time in the magazine’s Designer Profile section.

For a small Berlin-based vegan handbag brand, this was a defining moment — showing that conscious, animal-free luxury could enter the international fashion conversation.

Shortly after LUCKYNELLY’s first feature in British Vogue, the brand was approached by British ELLE and selected for its ELLE New Designers presentation.

VEGAN LUXURY AT ILM – AHEAD OF ITS TIME

In 2016, LUCKYNELLY exhibited at ILM Offenbach, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for leather goods and fashion accessories. At a time when vegan luxury handbags were still widely met with scepticism, the Berlin-based brand introduced an alternative vision for the future of luxury.

At a time when vegan luxury handbags were still uncommon within the traditional leather goods industry, LUCKYNELLY remained committed to its vision of creating sculptural handbags without animal leather. Looking back today, the exhibition marks an important milestone in the brand’s pioneering journey.

INSPIRED BY BLACKY

After Blacky was adopted from a Berlin animal shelter and became part of the LUCKYNELLY family, his distinctive silhouette inspired an entirely new design.

Handcrafted in the Berlin studio from vegan OLEATEX material, the Blacky Bag transforms his upright ears, rounded body and playful character into a sculptural wearable object — a personal tribute to rescue, companionship and the animals who continue to shape the world of LUCKYNELLY.
